How an outdoor wood fired sauna is heated

An outdoor wood fired sauna is an outdoor traditional sauna heated by a wood-burning stove that stands on the sauna floor, holds a load of sauna stones and vents its smoke through a chimney. The stove burns split firewood and has no electrical connection, so the sauna can be heated on an off-grid site. Harvia's M3 manual asks for dry wood and rules out painted or impregnated wood, and HUUM's HIVE Wood manual says that stove can only be heated with wood logs.

True North builds its range around this kind of heat: its 2026 Look Book says the company specializes in the wood-fired sauna and also offers electric heating. Dundalk LeisureCraft lists its CT Elation barrel with a wood-burning or electric heater, and SaunaLife says its G2 is large enough for a wood-fired sauna stove or can be configured with a 6 kW electric heater.

Are wood burning saunas safe?

A wood burning sauna is installed to its stove maker's safety rules: the stove keeps its safety distances from walls, benches and ceiling, stands on a protected floor and connects to a chimney. Harvia's M3 manual says no electrical devices, wires or flammable materials may sit within those safety distances and asks for Harvia protective bedding under the stove on a floor made of flammable material; HUUM's HIVE Wood manual says the stove must stand on a non-combustible surface and should only be connected to the chimney by a specialist.

The Harvia M3 kits sold with the Dundalk LeisureCraft and SaunaLife saunas include Harvia's protective sheath and floor bedding, and the HUUM HIVE Wood 13 kW package includes HUUM's Protective Bed S. The M3 kit sold with the True North saunas holds the stove, chimney and stones only, so the floor bedding is added separately on a flammable floor. Harvia's manual also warns that prolonged, intense heating can cause a risk of fire and gives temperatures over 212°F (100 °C) as too high in a sauna.

How long does a wood burning sauna take to heat up?

Harvia and HUUM publish no fixed heat-up time for the wood-burning stoves sold with these saunas. HUUM's HIVE Wood manual says the heating time of the sauna room depends on the thermal resistance of the wall materials, the size of the room and the power of the stove, and Harvia's M3 manual says that once the room is hot, a couple of pieces of wood keep it at bathing temperature.

How much does an outdoor wood fired sauna cost?

Dundalk LeisureCraft crates run 6 to 14 feet long, and a crate longer than 92 inches comes without a liftgate, so the buyer arranges a forklift with fork extensions or a tilt tow truck to unload it.
