What is the HUUM HIVE Wood sauna stove?

The HUUM HIVE Wood is a wood-burning sauna stove from HUUM of Estonia, built around a round steel frame that holds the stones: 199 lb (90 kg) on the HIVE Wood 13 and 287 lb (130 kg) on the HIVE Wood 17 and 17 LS. The 13 kW model heats sauna rooms of 212–459 cu ft and the 17 kW models 283–565 cu ft. It burns wood logs only and needs no electrical connection; the stones and a chimney are bought separately.

The round design puts the stones on show, and HUUM says the large stone mass gives long-lasting, mild steam. A 0.2 in (5 mm) stainless-steel flame tamer lines the firebox, and the glass door shows the fire. HUUM's manual says the stove suits both a dry sauna and one with steam from water on the stones.

What is the HIVE Wood 17 LS?

The HUUM HIVE Wood 17 LS is the 17 kW stove with an extended firebox that passes through a non-combustible wall, so the fire is loaded and tended from an adjacent room while the stones heat the sauna. It has the same room range and stone capacity as the HIVE Wood 17, and HUUM's manual sets extra rules for the wall opening and the floor in front of the door.

Installation

How is the HUUM HIVE Wood installed?

The HUUM HIVE Wood stands on a non-combustible floor strong enough to carry the stove and its 199 or 287 lb of stones, and HUUM's manual says only a specialist may connect it to the chimney; HUUM also recommends a specialist lay the stones. Installation must follow your local building and fire-safety rules.

HUUM HIVE Wood safety distances

Keep at least these distances from the HIVE Wood to combustible materials. HUUM's reflectors, Reflect HM for the HIVE Wood 13 and Reflect H for the HIVE Wood 17 and 17 LS, let the stove sit at half the safety distance from the wall.

  • No electrical equipment or wiring may sit inside the stove's safety area

What floor does the HIVE Wood need?

HUUM's manual requires a non-combustible floor with the carrying capacity for the stove and its stones. On a wood or other combustible floor, HUUM's protective bedding increases safety, and HUUM also recommends it over water underfloor-heating pipes: Protective Bed S for the HIVE Wood 13 and Protective Bed L for the HIVE Wood 17. HUUM's bedding is not made for LS models.

What chimney does the HIVE Wood need?

The HIVE Wood's flue outlet is on top of the stove, 4.53 in (115 mm) across. HUUM's manual calls for a T600 chimney with at least 15.81 sq in (10,200 mm²) of cross-section and 12 Pa of draught, joined with metal flue pipes with smooth elbows and venting into its own flue: a flue shared with another furnace is not permitted. Only a specialist may connect the stove to the chimney. Three HUUM chimney kits fit the HIVE Wood:

HUUM's Thru-Wall Backside Connection kit is for the HIVE Flow's rear outlet, not the HIVE Wood. HUUM leaves the chimney's height to local fire-safety regulations; HUUM extension pipes lengthen a kit where needed. Keep the kit's single-wall parts at least 19.7 in (500 mm) and double-wall parts at least 2 in (50 mm) from combustible materials.

Installing the HIVE Wood 17 LS through a wall

  • The firebox passes through a non-combustible wall, such as stone or concrete; HUUM recommends insulating the opening with mineral wool or similar
  • Leave at least 0.4 in (10 mm) around the firebox for air movement, so add 0.8 in (20 mm) to HUUM's Table 1 height D (18.1 in) and width G (11.8 in) when sizing the opening
  • If the floor in front of the firebox door is combustible, install fire-resistant floor protection 23.63 in (600 mm) wider than the door and at least 15.75 in (400 mm) deep
  • HUUM's protective bedding is not made for LS models

First firing

Fire the stove outdoors once before installing it: HUUM's manual says the heat-resistant paint on the outer casing gives off an unpleasant odor while it cures during the first firing, and a short piece of flue on the smoke outlet improves the draft. Until then, handle the painted metal carefully to avoid scratches.

Firing and caring for the HIVE Wood

  • Burn wood logs only. HUUM finds 11.8 in (30 cm) logs for the HIVE Wood 13 and 15.7 in (40 cm) logs for the HIVE Wood 17 best, 3.1–5.9 in (8–15 cm) across, with some small, easily lit pieces at the start
  • Open the ash tray up to 0.4 in (10 mm) while lighting, then close it to 0.08–0.12 in (2–3 mm) depending on the draught, and keep the door closed except to add wood
  • If the firebox glows red, the stove is overheating: close the ash tray completely, keep the door shut and, if possible, cut off air to the room. HUUM does not cover metal deformed by overheating
  • Empty the ash tray before each firing, clean the stove's heating surfaces at least every 20 uses and have the chimney and flues cleaned at least once a year
  • Wash the stones before laying them; HUUM recommends a specialist lay them. Ceramic stones can shorten the stove's life, and crumbled stones should be replaced once a year
  • Keep water off the hot door glass, and don't throw salt water, hard water or iron-rich water on the stove
  • HUUM gives no fixed heat-up time: it depends on the wall materials, the room's size and the stove's output

  • Door glass and ash grate of wood-burning stoves

  • All controller sensors
  • Damage from a heater that is the wrong size for the room, from unsuitable stones, or from installation, use or maintenance that does not follow HUUM's manuals

What keeps the warranty in effect

  • Inspect the product when it arrives and report any visible damage within 7 days, with photos, before installing it.
  • Install it following HUUM's manual and local building, electrical and fire codes. An electric product must be connected by a licensed electrician, with proof of the installation.
  • Report a defect within 30 days of finding it. For products bought from Topture, report it to Topture, which passes the claim to HUUM and helps with troubleshooting.

Absolutely fantastic stove!
Absolutely fantastic stove! Gentle heat and great look. We are thrilled with the HIVE Wood 13. Yes, it takes its time to heat up (approx. 1 - 1.5 hours, depending on the wood), but that's normal with this amount of stones. The wait is worth it! The warmth is incredibly soft and even throughout the whole room. The best part is the large viewing window, the crackling and the view of the fire are pure relaxation. The craftsmanship is very robust and the design is a real eye-catcher. Every infusion is a pleasure. Full 5 stars!

Amazing steam!
A traditional experience with modern style. Amazing steam! This stove is the soul of our sauna. We chose the HIVE Wood 17 because of its massive stone capacity, and we have not regretted it. The stove requires a proper heating-up, but it rewards you with soft and long-lasting steam. The steam is truly moist and oxygen-rich, never sharp. Excellent Steam, Slow Warm-up
The HIVE is stunning, transforming our sauna into a modern spa. The enormous thermal mass provides the best, softest steam imaginable, lasting well into the second and third water throws. My only complaint is the warm-up time; despite the air tunnel, heating 250 kg of stone takes a while. Pairing it with the UKU Wi-Fi controller is essential for pre-heating remotely.

The centerpiece of our sauna. A true showstopper.
We chose the HIVE Wood 17 LS model, which feeds through the wall from our changing room, and it is the best decision we ever made. The mess from the wood stays outside, and inside, we just get the beautiful glow from the huge glass door. The heat is... different. It's not the sharp, quick heat of an electric heater. With 287 lb of stones, it takes a good 90 minutes to get up to temp, but the löyly (steam) is worth the wait. It’s a deep, soft, enveloping warmth that lasts forever. Tossing water on the stones gives a full, gentle steam, not a "shock." It's the authentic experience we were looking for. 100% recommend.

Choose the HUUM HIVE Wood by the volume of the sauna room. HUUM's manual rates the HIVE Wood 13 (13 kW) for 212–459 cu ft (6–13 m³) and the HIVE Wood 17 and 17 LS (17 kW) for 283–565 cu ft (8–16 m³). Where both ranges fit, the 17 holds more stones, 287 lb against 199 lb, and takes longer logs, 15.7 in against 11.8 in. The 17 LS has the same rating as the 17 but is loaded from an adjacent room through a non-combustible wall. All three models stand 29.6 in (750 mm) tall.
What chimney does the HUUM HIVE Wood need?
The HUUM HIVE Wood connects to its chimney at the top, through a 4.53 in (115 mm) flue outlet. HUUM's manual calls for a T600 chimney with at least 15.81 sq in (10,200 mm²) of cross-section and 12 Pa of draught, venting into its own flue, never shared with another furnace, and only a specialist may make the connection. Topture sells three HUUM chimney kits that fit: the Thru-Wall kit (H3102), the flat-or-curved-roof kit (H3101) and the Thru-Angled Ceiling kit for roofs pitched 0–20° (H3100). HUUM leaves chimney height to local fire-safety regulations, and HUUM extension pipes lengthen a kit.
How is the HUUM HIVE Wood installed, and what floor does it need?
The HUUM HIVE Wood stands on a non-combustible floor strong enough to carry the stove and its 199 or 287 lb of stones. HUUM's manual sets minimum distances to combustible materials: 7.48 in at the sides, 9.8 in behind and 35.5 in in front for the HIVE Wood 13; 19.7 in, 19.7 in and 39.4 in for the 17 and 17 LS; and 47.3 in above both. A single heat barrier halves those distances and a double one quarters them. On a wood or other combustible floor, HUUM's Protective Bed S (13) or Bed L (17) increases safety; it is not made for LS models. No electrical wiring may run inside the safety area.
How is the HUUM HIVE Wood 17 LS installed through a wall?
The HUUM HIVE Wood 17 LS is loaded from an adjacent room: its firebox passes through a non-combustible wall, such as stone or concrete, and HUUM recommends insulating the opening with mineral wool or similar. HUUM's manual asks for at least 0.4 in (10 mm) of air gap around the firebox, so add 0.8 in (20 mm) to its Table 1 height D (18.1 in) and width G (11.8 in) when sizing the opening. What firewood does the HUUM HIVE Wood burn, and how is it fired the first time?
The HUUM HIVE Wood burns wood logs only; HUUM's manual finds logs 11.8 in (30 cm) long best for the HIVE Wood 13 and 15.7 in (40 cm) for the 17, 3.1–5.9 in across, loaded in up to three parts, with some small, easily lit pieces to start. Open the ash tray up to 0.4 in while lighting, then close it to 0.08–0.12 in and keep the door shut except to add wood. Fire the stove outdoors once before installing it: its heat-resistant paint gives off an odor while it cures, and a short piece of flue on the outlet helps the draft. HUUM gives no fixed heat-up time; it depends on the room's wall materials, its size and the stove's output.
How many stones does the HUUM HIVE Wood take, and how are they maintained?
The HUUM HIVE Wood 13 holds 199 lb (90 kg) of stones and the HIVE Wood 17 and 17 LS hold 287 lb (130 kg); HUUM's manual specifies 6 and 9 boxes of 33 lb. Any natural granite or sauna-stove stones work, such as HUUM Stones 24 (rounded, 2–4 in), but ceramic stones can shorten the stove's life. Wash the stones first; HUUM recommends a specialist lay them. Temperature swings make stones crumble, so replace crumbled ones once a year. Empty the ash tray before each firing, clean the heating surfaces at least every 20 uses and have the chimney and flues cleaned at least once a year.
What problems do HUUM HIVE Wood owners run into, and how are they avoided?
Most problems HUUM's manual warns about on the HUUM HIVE Wood come from overfiring and water. A firebox glowing red means overheating, which deforms the metal and is not covered: close the ash tray completely, keep the door shut and, if possible, cut off air to the room. Keep water off the hot door glass, because HUUM's warranty does not cover the tempered glass. Never throw salt water on the stove, and avoid hard or iron-rich water. Forced extract ventilation can cause poor combustion, so HUUM allows it only under a licensed specialist's supervision. After a long break, have a specialist check the firebox, grate, ash tray and chimney before firing.
Who makes the HUUM HIVE Wood, and what is it made of?
The HUUM HIVE Wood is made by HUUM Sauna OÜ in Tartumaa, Estonia. Its firebox has a 0.2 in (5 mm) stainless-steel flame tamer and a glass door, a round steel frame holds the stones, and the outer casing carries a heat-resistant paint that cures during the first firing. HUUM's manual lists testing to EN 15821:2010, the European standard for multi-firing sauna stoves heated with wood logs, with a total efficiency of 67% for the 13 and 66% for the 17. Orders ship from manufacturer and distributor warehouses in the U.S. and Canada, and some products ship directly from the manufacturer in Europe. Each product page shows its estimated delivery time.

How much is shipping?

Orders over $200 ship free within the contiguous United States. Orders under $200 carry a small shipping fee.

Two exceptions: SaunaLife and ThermaSol products carry a freight charge at any order value, and sauna stones ordered without a heater ship at $60 per box because of their weight.

Do you provide financing?

How long will it take for my items to arrive?

If your order is in stock, most orders ship within 2–7 business days of purchase. Transit time then depends on the distance from the warehouse and, for freight, on booking a delivery appointment.

For freight deliveries, the carrier will call or text you to schedule an appointment once the shipment reaches their local terminal. Someone needs to be there to inspect the shipment and sign for it. Smaller parcels arrive by UPS or FedEx without an appointment.
